Why the future doesn't need us.

Our most powerful 21st-century technologies - robotics, genetic engineering, and nanotech - arethreatening to make humans an endangered species. By Bill Joy.The same technologies that will let us cure diseases, expand the economy and overcome everyday inconveniences can theoretically bring about catastrophes. Is the risk of apocalypse serious  enough for us to relinqish the current pace of technological innovation?  In an article in the April 2000 issue of Wired ("Why the Future Doesn't Need Us"), Bill Joy, co-founder of and [past] chief scientist at Sun Microsystems, argued that our current pace of technological progress poses a very real threat to the future of the human race. He proposed a new ethical standard to guide innovation - and he even recommended that scientists halt potentially dangerous research. His apocalyptic vision of the future and his proposal to limit research has provoked a debate about innovation throughout the high-tech industry.  There are three types of technology that most concern Bill Joy and other "futurists":

1.  - Genetic Engineering. The selective manipulation of genes of plants, animals or humans in an attempt to create some specific result. Examples might include vitamin-fortified vegetables, larger cattle and more intelligent humans. The recent completion of a "draft" of the human genome is seen as an ominous indicator of progress toward advanced gene manipulation. 2.  - Nanotechnology. The control of the structure of matter at the molecular level, often atom by atom. Nanotechnology includes the notable sub-fields of nanomedicine, using manipulated molecules to fight disease;  and molecular electronics, where molecules act as transistors. 3.  - Robotics. Mechanical objects that one day may have the ability to think and act like humans.This would be accomplished through artificial intelligence - computer programs that are notconfined to the direct instructions of the programmer but can come up with "creative" solutions  to problems. Relentlessly advancing computing power has convinced many technologists that artificial intelligence can become a reality within decades. Il Ministero della Salute ha finanziato con 20 milioni di Euro un progetto di ricerca coordinato dalla prima Divisione Universitaria di Neurologia delle Molinette. Obbietivo: il perfezionamento di una tecnica chirurgica per il trattamneto delle persone colpite dal morbo di Parkinson. L'intervento consiste nel posizionamnto di un elettrodo nel cervello per migliorare la capacità motoria del paziente quando la malattia è in stato avanzato e i farmaci non producono più effetto. Istituto Besta di Milano, forse il miglior centro italiano di neurochirurgia;  prof. Broggi e prof. Franzini, neurochirurghi, spiegano trattarsi di unaneuromodulazione a bassissimo voltaggio che ha l’effetto di tenere sotto controllo l’agitazione psicomotoria. 

- Niente a che vedere con la lobotomia - si precisa [l’affermazione non petita coglie di sorpresa]
- Gli elettrodi inviati nel cervello in stereotassia? si apprende- vengono collegati con due pacemaker neurologici impiantati sotto pelle nella zona della clavicola chepossono essere accesi, spenti,  regolati. le informazioni parziali sono pericolose, soprattutto in materie così complesse e delicate e a lungo termine come il trattamento dei disturbi mentali. “Il Comitato etico del Besta sta mettendo a punto un protocollo? Molti dei pazienti così trattati sono riusciti a tornare alla vita, uscendo dai manicomi- conclude il prof Broggi. Certo, come per i farmaci o la psicoterapia vi saranno indicazioni, controindicazioni, effetti collaterali, ovviamente non citati nell’articolo per ragioni di spazio. (Peccato però perché "Non c’è peggior bugia di una parziale verità” si continua a ripetere). Forse funzionerà, comunque ci documenteremo. Rimarrà l’errore scientifico  fondamentale , a  livello  epistemologico, di considerare Il disturbo mentale  assimilabile al morbo di Parkinson, sul piano eziopatogenetico ancor  prima che terapeutico, di trattare per esempio l'agitazione psicomotoria di uno psicotico come un sintomo equivalente ai tremiti incoercibili del morbo di Parkinson, di permettere che la cura di un sintomo a patogenesi complessa, anche con un fondamentale significato intrapsichico e relazionale, si attui grazie a un telecomando che rimane in mano a un medico. Fenomeno on-off, appunto. Ricordiamo umilmente al neurochirurgo e alla giornalista del Corriere della Sera che, almeno qua da noi, in Italia, i manicomi non ci sono e non ci sono perché sono totalmente inutili e dannosi come modalità di cura dei disturbi mentali, e che , almeno qua da noi, il problema non è uscire dal manicomio. Il problema è come non rientrarci.
Errori di questa gravità portano a creare strumenti tecnici per la psichiatria ad alto rischio di contribuire efficacemente a richiudere dall’interno le porte del"Manicomio Invisibile" che già si dà parecchio da fare da sè. Nel nostro mestiere fatto di tante parole, si sa, i fatti parlano parecchio di più.

There are indications that science is moving inexorably closer to the use of microchips in humans. In fact, some have described human implantation as inevitable. [14] Carrying information on a microchip for identification has already been developed for use, e.g., on a tag outside the body. [15]  Dallas Semiconductor is marketing a Touch Memory Button microchip with information to be read by a scanner. [16] Potential uses include employee identification. [17: Information has been released on an externally applied suitable device for employee identification. Scott Liebs, Data - Look for The Button -- Dallas Semiconductor's miniature device finds a range of applications, Information Week, Aug. 1, 1994, available in Lexis-Nexis Library, News File. ]. Also, SmartDevice, a microchip manufactured by a subsidiary of Hughes Aircraft Co., [18] has been described as follows: [19]The chip is a passive transponder, without any power source, which has meant it can be kept very small. The information is non volatile and can be activated by low frequency  radio waves and so read in a manner not unlike the reading of bar coded items. It... is an application-specific integrated circuit. The code is burned in a [sic] the time of manufacture. It has a non-magnetic, ferrite core and a copper antenna and is encased in biocompatible glass and as it is so small it can pass through the bore of a needle to be inserted. The SmartDevice is being placed within the Trilucent Adjustable Breast Implant, by LipoMatrix, Inc. [20] to "include device manufacturing data, device performance data and to facilitate periodic information updates regarding device status, adverse event reporting and post-market surveillance. "[21] Clinical trials have already begun in Europe [22]: The following countries are conducting trials which begun in October 1993: Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.Id. Additionally, Spain and France will soon also be testing the device. Chips With Everything!, supra note [17] and are about to begin in the U.S. [23] An investigational device  exemption has  been  granted  by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). [24]  If the device is approved, it would not be difficult to envisage a facile transition to SmartDevice or a similar microchip being implanted into humans alone. In fact, steps in that direction have already been made. According to one source, Hughes Aircraft has submitted a read-write device for carrying a person's medical history for FDA approval. [25] Alhough the device can be read from only about a foot away, with the addition of a battery, it could be read at greater distances. [26] As mentioned, a patent discloses a microchip applied to the tooth of a human or animal. [27] Identification is accomplished by scanning the teeth. [28] Thus, an internal, implanted microchip for identification of humans  is  already  a  reality. Also, IBM researchers are reportedly working on personal area network technology (PAN) to transfer data stored in a human implant. [29] Apparently, they  are  exploiting  the  salinity o f  the  body  to create  an  electric  field,  by which  data  could  be  read. In this manner, data could be exchanged between people, or verified by an external mechanical system as a method of securing identification.

The media has been subtly supporting microchip implants in humans for a number of years. The below Reuters article on the ABC News website is yet another article which largely supports the idea. Particularly as issues of the rights of government to snoop on its citizens are being raised, I certainly don't want to have any microchips implanted into my body. Dr. Delgado conducted experiments in the early 1960s that placed an electrode on the eardrum (middle ear) of a cat. The device picked-up people’s conversations and transmitted them to a receiver for listening. According to Victor Marchetti, co-author of The CIA and the Cult of Intelligence (1974), the CIA attached a tiny radio implant to a cat’s cochlea (inner ear) for surveillance purposes. A few years after Delgado’s implanted “bug” experiments, Dr. Ralph Schwitzgebel developed a miniature radio receiver so that a therapist could communicate with his subject. Very small combination microphone-transceiver-speakers are implanted in unsuspecting people’s ears. The instruments transmit nearby conversations and deliver audio commands to individuals that are usually unaware of the voices.

 ... The situation just described is not our first encounter with the apparent use of medical implant devices in these harassment/mind-control cases. Another of our contacts began receiving auditory input roughly 15 years after she had 4 mm. cochlear implants placed in her ears. The ‘voices’ claim to be affiliated with the CIA and, among other things, expressed intentions of running this woman as an agent in denied areas by ‘piggybacking’ their audio transmissions onto standard FM frequencies to avoid detection. ... [Another] individual ... also appears to have been ‘tagged’ by some type of implant device. ... During this meeting, she accepted the offer of a drink, blacked out after consuming it, and awoke four hours later, ... to find that the back of her ear had been punctured and was bleeding. ... She has since found two adjacent puncture marks behind her ear, which are not healing properly, and between which she can feel the presence of a ‘wire’ measuring approximately 1/4" length. ... In yet another case involving auditory input, the individual has allegedly been informed by her ‘voices’ that the technologies being used against her were stolen from the CIA by a maverick employee, whose group is now targeting her from a distance of 2,000 miles. ... One unusually-candid CIA spokesman also allegedly informed this individual that, ‘while the CIA does not deny having this equipment,’ they ‘do not use it in this country.’
